The annual Galway Primary Schools Cross Country Championships were held yesterday in Renmore. The organisers would like to thank all who helped with the running on the event and the local GAA club, Renmore Community Centre and Galway City Council for the use of the facilities. Thanks also to all the schools, the athletes who participated and the parents who supported - hopefully you enjoyed the event.

The predicted rainfall luckily did not arrive and the races were held in reasonable conditions. Numbers were up significantly from last year across all races:-

  • 3/4th girls +48
  • 3/4th boys +93
  • 5/6th girls +67
  • 5/6th boys +95
and a slightly different format will have to be considered next year for safety reasons.  1323 children completed the 4 races, almost certainly the largest mass participation event for primary school children in Galway and possibly in Connacht.
Options being considered for next year include splitting the races into two for each age group, with potentially a north/south championships followed by a county final a week later - with one taking place on a weekend so as not to take up an additional school day. The Galway Athletics Board would welcome any suggestions from schools in this regard and are very aware that the existing format is no longer suitable for the large numbers taking part.

Results of the 4 races were as follows:-

If there are any queries on the results or suggestions in regard to next year, schools and parents should email either James Lundon or Michael Tobin:-

The top 15 individuals and top 3 teams in each race go forward to the Connacht finals which will take place in Calry, Sligo on Saturday 13th October at 1pm. If you are not travelling, please let James Lundon know as soon as possible as he will be automatically entering all qualifiers.

To get to Calry, as you enter Sligo town on dual carriageway, go through 6 sets of traffic lights on 7th set turn right (signposted Enniskillen) and proceed through small roundabout, past Sligo IT on your left to traffic lights and go straight through (i.e. leave Enniskillen road).  Continue on for approx 2 miles until a garage on your left and playing fields on your right with clubhouse. Normally parking is adjacent to this garage and the race is held on the field behind the pitches on the shores of Lough Gill.
